How we check the numbers

HostOrOwn gathers data from structured feeds and official documents. Each retrieved source is archived with a content hash. The hash identifies the captured material; the retrieval record shows when we checked it. This gives a published number a traceable source even if the live page later changes.

Collection has just started, and the site currently has no published calculators. The process below is the standard we will use before releasing them. It should help readers understand both the evidence and its limits.

Facts, prices, and estimates

We distinguish vendor-documented specifications, vendor recommendations, third-party observations, our estimates, and measurements we perform ourselves. An estimate must show its assumptions. A claimed measurement needs a stated method and conditions. We do not turn a maximum power rating into an idle-power measurement or invent missing specifications.

Prices need a currency, a checking date, and a clear treatment of tax and shipping where the source provides it. Unknown charges will remain unknown. A successful recheck of unchanged source material advances the checked date; it does not create a price change. Pages with data will show checked and changed dates separately.

Calculations readers can inspect

Future calculators will state the period, units, territory, and versions of their assumptions. Electricity rates, equipment life, and recurring service costs must be visible inputs. A result cannot account for every household's network, downtime tolerance, or maintenance time, so those limits will be explained alongside it.

Information that conflicts with another source will need review before it supports a comparison. Official documents can also become outdated.
